According to the Iqvia report “The Global Use of Medicine in 2019 and Outlook to 2023”, the global pharmaceutical market will exceed the overall value of 1.5 trillion dollars in 2023 with a compound annual growth rate (the so-called CAGR) of between 3% and 6% over the next five years (source: iqvia.com). If we narrow the focus on the Italian panorama, growth and dynamism are confirmed: the Pharma sector in our country, in fact, grew by 117% from 2008 to 2018. And if the average pharmaceutical expenditure in the period 2014-2018 stood at 34.4 billion dollars, in the five-year period 2019-2023 it will rise to a figure between 40 and 44 billion dollars. The spending ceiling for direct purchase of medicines for 2022 is expected to be around 9.6 billion euros, or 7.8% of the National Health Fund (FSN). However, spending on direct purchases is expected to be around 11.8-11.9 billion euros (an increase of around 5% compared to 2021) (source: iqvia.com).
